When did the world "liberal" become evil?
Webster defines liberal as "associated with ideals of individuals, especially economic freedom, greater individual participation in government, and constitutional and administrative reforms, designed to secure these objects."
I have also heard the term liberal in reference to slow, progressive change. Progress. The same concept that brought us the civil rights movement, women's suffrage, and humane working conditions. To listen to the right wing media speak of the liberal with disdain confuses me. It seems to me that progress is a positive term that should shape a nation. Conservatives seem to be confusing progress with a detachment of moral character. I won't get into the bizarre, hypocritical values many conservatives hold dear, but it is important to clarify the vilification of liberals.
Here are some ideals I suggest the religious right stand and fight for. Fight for people to get paid a living wage. Fight against big business that exploit children and pollute our environment. Fight for the rights of every human (yes, that means homosexuals and don't twist the bible to reflect hatred). Stand for our troops coming home from an unjust war. Don't stand for genocide in Africa. Stand for separation of church and state( no this doesn't mean you betray your religion, but rather encourage an inclusive educational system). And perhaps most pertaining to your immediate future, fight for church leaders who are abusing children to be held accountable by the law (not shuffled around by the church).
In conclusion I encourage the religious right to take a look in the mirror and see if what they stand for is just and right, not only by their religious standards, but within their own mind.

What an powerful posting! Excellent POV - we should be proud to be liberals!!
You said it so well. I think it was a Rovian plot that turned the word liberal into a cussword. We need to take it back. The right wingers always say, "the Democrat Party," or the, "Democrat candidate," as if the party could not possibly be democratic.
